Book: The Syringa Tree by Pamela Gien

This story is set in the 20 or so years leading up to the apartheid time in South Africa. It was written from the perspective of a little (white) girl, devotes a lot of attention to her relationship with the family's helper and the helper's daughter. I don't want to give away too much, but it was pretty sad. Not my favorite, but I'm not sure that I can really articulate the reason.
